Chelsea are currently in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward is reportedly interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, with optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal could be reached. Welbeck has one year remaining on his current contract with Brighton.

The potential acquisition of Welbeck signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy. Influential owner Behdad Eghbali indicated in April an acceptance that the club’s model of signing young players needed a “tweak.” Chelsea are now seeking to add more experienced players to their squad.

Strategic Shift at Chelsea

Welbeck’s possible arrival aligns with Chelsea’s apparent new focus on players with significant Premier League experience. This strategy was also evident in their attempts to sign 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland earlier in the summer, though Sunderland declined to sell the Switzerland captain. The club is also close to finalising a move for 26-year-old defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, further adding Premier League-ready experience.

While Chelsea recently signed 23-year-old attacker Morgan Rogers for a club-record £117m, who brings Premier League experience, the interest in Welbeck, Xhaka, and 32-year-old free agent John Stones highlights a broader change in approach. This shift is understood to be influenced by new manager Xabi Alonso, who has reportedly identified a need for more experienced players and strong personalities to address shortcomings that contributed to the team’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Welbeck had a strong season for Brighton, scoring 13 league goals in 37 games. This was his best league return in his career. He has scored a total of 51 goals in 201 matches for Brighton since joining from Watford in 2020. His overall game, including his ability to hold up the ball and involve teammates, is also seen as a valuable asset. Senior figures at Brighton were reportedly convinced that Welbeck should have been considered for the World Cup as a back-up striker.

The striker’s presence behind the scenes is also noted, with his ability to drive standards and mentor younger players seen as beneficial for Chelsea’s squad, which includes many young talents. Welbeck previously played for Manchester United and Arsenal, scoring 29 times in 142 appearances for United and 32 goals in 126 games for Arsenal.

Impact on Current Forwards

Welbeck’s potential arrival would likely have implications for several of Chelsea’s current attacking options. There are already questions surrounding the futures of forwards such as Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marc Guiu.

Jackson, who recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, was expected to remain at Stamford Bridge but is reportedly open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa. Delap, who joined Chelsea a year ago for £30m from Ipswich, was keen to establish himself under Alonso but is increasingly expected to depart. The future of Emegha, who recently joined Chelsea from Strasbourg, also remains uncertain.

Guiu is understood to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea reportedly valuing him at about £25m. Welbeck’s move could mean that more than one of these forwards will be seeking opportunities elsewhere. At his age, Welbeck may be content to provide cover for Joao Pedro, who is currently regarded as Chelsea’s first-choice option.

Chelsea have a history of signing players from Brighton, including Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Additionally, several Brighton staff members, such as sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, have moved to Stamford Bridge in recent years. Welbeck signed a 12-month contract extension in March, with his current deal running until the end of the 2026-27 season.
