Commonwealth Games: Gyaneshwari Yadav wins silver as India claims fourth weightlifting medal
India’s Fourth Weightlifting Medal
Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday. This achievement marks India‘s fourth weightlifting medal at the ongoing games, contributing to the nation’s overall medal tally.
The Commonwealth Games weightlifting events involve two main disciplines: the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter is granted three attempts in both disciplines to achieve their best possible lift.
In the snatch, athletes execute a continuous movement to lift the barbell from the ground to an overhead position, utilising a wide grip. The clean and jerk involves two distinct phases: first, lifting the bar to the shoulders (the clean), followed by a pause, and then driving it overhead (the jerk), maintaining a steady position until a buzzer sounds.
Yadav’s Performance in Detail
Gyaneshwari Yadav, who is 23-year-old and hails from Bhondiya village in Chhattisgarh, demonstrated a strong performance. In the snatch discipline, she successfully lifted 88kg, securing the second position in this segment of the competition. Nigeria‘s Onome Didih led the snatch with a lift of 93kg, while Canada‘s Groulx was third with 83kg.
The standings after the snatch discipline were: Didih with 93kg, Gyaneshwari Yadav with 88kg, and Groulx with 83kg.
Moving into the clean and jerk, Gyaneshwari Yadav achieved a successful lift of 111kg. However, Onome Omolola Didih of Nigeria managed to lift 113kg, which allowed her to maintain her lead and ultimately secure the gold medal. This left Gyaneshwari Yadav with the silver medal.

Gyaneshwari Yadav‘s total lift for the competition was 199kg, combining her 88kg snatch and 111kg clean and jerk. Onome Omolola Didih‘s total lift was 206kg, achieved through a 93kg snatch and a 113kg clean and jerk. Didih‘s performance also set new Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records.
Canada‘s Rebeka Groulx earned the bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category with a total lift of 178kg.
India’s Expanding Medal Haul
This silver medal for Gyaneshwari Yadav contributes to India‘s growing success in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games. It is the fourth weightlifting medal for the nation at this event and the fifth medal overall. Earlier in the competition, other Indian weightlifters also secured podium finishes.
These include Mirabai Chanu, who won a gold medal in the women’s 48kg category, Rishikanta Singh, who secured a silver medal in the men’s 60kg category, and Muthupandi Raja, who also claimed a silver medal in the men’s 65kg category. The competition saw Gyaneshwari Yadav achieve a personal-best total of 199kg in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event. The final outcome of the women’s 53kg category was decided by the last lifts, with both Gyaneshwari Yadav and Onome Omolola Didih attempting 111kg in their final clean and jerk attempts.
Didih successfully lifted 111kg, securing the gold, while Yadav‘s earlier successful lift of 111kg confirmed her silver medal position. The event highlighted the competitive spirit among the lifters.
