Chelsea secure verbal agreement for Morgan Rogers
Chelsea have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Morgan Rogers. The deal for the attacking midfielder is understood to be worth £117 million, though it is still in the process of being finalised. Personal terms have been agreed for a six-year contract, which includes an option for an additional 12 months, and a medical examination is scheduled for Monday.
Rogers, who is 23 years old, has expressed a desire to join Chelsea, citing the appeal of new manager Xabi Alonso and the club’s overall project. While Arsenal had also shown interest in the England international, Chelsea appears to be his preferred destination.
Impact on transfer records and club finances
This anticipated transfer would mark a record fee for Chelsea, surpassing the amount paid for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023. It would also set a new record for an English player, exceeding a previous fee agreed between Manchester City and Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.
Rogers‘ existing contract with Aston Villa runs until 2030, following new terms signed in November 2024. He initially moved to Villa Park from Middlesbrough in February 2024. As part of that earlier deal, Middlesbrough holds a 20 per cent sell-on clause, which could result in a significant earning for the Championship club from this transfer.
Aston Villa had reportedly anticipated the potential departure of Rogers, but only for a substantial fee. The club plans to reinvest some of the transfer funds. They have already brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg and are considering Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, who underwent a medical on Friday.
Rogers’ performance and tactical fit at Chelsea
Over the past two seasons, Rogers has established himself as a prominent attacking midfielder in the Premier League. He has contributed 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances for Aston Villa. During the 2025-26 campaign, he provided 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions, a season in which Villa qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League.
He received his first senior call-up for England in November 2024 and has participated in six of his country’s matches at the World Cup. He started in the final group-stage match against Panama and the game against Argentina. Rogers also set up England’s only goal in the semi-final with a cross for Anthony Gordon.
The arrival of Rogers at Chelsea raises questions about his integration into the squad, particularly concerning his potential impact on Cole Palmer. Both players are capable of operating in various attacking positions and progressed through the Manchester City academy together. Alonso, the new Chelsea manager, has demonstrated tactical flexibility in his previous roles at Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.
Reports suggest that Alonso‘s preferred 3-4-2-1 attacking system, which he employed at Bayer Leverkusen, could offer clues as to how Rogers might be utilised. In this system, wing-backs provide width, and two No. 10s occupy half-spaces to feed a central striker. This setup could allow Rogers to form a partnership with fellow new signing Marco Palestra, known for his adventurous play, while Cole Palmer could be given freedom in a similar role on the opposite side.
The move for Rogers suggests Chelsea‘s intent to recreate a winning formula and potentially return to an expansive back-three system under Alonso. This transfer also underscores the club’s ability to attract top talent despite missing out on European football last season.
For Arsenal, who had considered Rogers among their top targets, the escalated price point has led them to assess alternative options, such as Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain. Rogers is currently with the England squad for the World Cup third-place play-off against France.
The transfer of Rogers is the second midfielder departure for Aston Villa this week, following Youri Tielemans‘ move to Manchester United.
