Chelsea sign Morgan Rogers in record British deal

Chelsea have announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The deal, which sees Rogers commit to a contract until 2033, has been reported by British media to be worth £117 million, potentially making him the most expensive British player in history. Neither club has publicly disclosed the financial terms of the transfer.

Reports suggest that this transfer fee surpasses the previous record for a British player, which was reportedly set earlier this month when Manchester City paid up to £116 million for midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Chelsea’s previous record signing was Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo, who joined the club in 2023 for £115 million from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rogers’ move to Stamford Bridge

Rogers expressed his excitement about joining Chelsea, stating his long-standing admiration for the club, which he considers the biggest in London. He highlighted his enthusiasm for the club’s current project, including working with the new manager and the existing squad.

The 23-year-old, who will turn 24 on Sunday, can operate as a winger or an attacking midfielder. He departs Aston Villa after a two-year tenure, during which he contributed to their Europa League victory in May. Rogers scored in the 3-0 final win against Freiburg, marking Villa’s first major European trophy since 1982.

Rogers made 125 appearances for Aston Villa, scoring 31 goals, after his move from Middlesbrough in 2024. His performances earned him an England debut later that year. He participated in seven of England’s eight matches as the national team secured a third-place finish at the World Cup. Last season, Rogers had his most productive domestic campaign, netting 10 Premier League goals.

The acquisition of Rogers is seen by some as a significant footballing move, driven by manager Xabi Alonso. Alonso’s influence is highlighted by the fact that he is both the manager and coach, suggesting a more direct footballing rationale behind the transfer decisions.

Alonso’s impact and future prospects

The photograph of Alonso and Rogers smiling together is viewed as a positive sign for Chelsea fans, indicating a shift towards football-centric decisions under the new management. This contrasts with previous signings that were sometimes perceived as more business-oriented.

Rogers’ versatility is expected to be a valuable asset for Alonso. If Alonso opts for the back-three system he successfully employed at Bayer Leverkusen, there is potential for Rogers and his close friend Cole Palmer to play as dual number 10s. Last season, Rogers recorded 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances for Aston Villa. Over his last two seasons, he has accumulated 18 Premier League goals and 16 Premier League assists.

Rogers expressed his excitement about playing alongside Palmer, noting that Palmer has been in constant communication with him. This camaraderie between the two players is also seen as a positive for Chelsea supporters, potentially reinforcing Palmer’s commitment to the club.

Chelsea are also reportedly interested in other players, including John Stones and Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, which are also viewed as footballing moves driven by Alonso. Additionally, Chelsea are among the clubs pursuing Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, who could be a replacement for Enzo Fernandez if a substantial fee is secured for the Argentinian midfielder.

While the fee for Rogers is considerable, his seven-year contract and the opportunity to work with Alonso were significant factors in his decision to join Chelsea. Alonso’s presence is considered a draw for potential new signings, and further transfer activity is anticipated this summer, including both arrivals and departures, all with Alonso’s approval. Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season, are scheduled to begin their league campaign away to Fulham on August 24.
