France and Spain are set to face each other in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final in Dallas on Tuesday. Didier Deschamps, the manager for France, has predicted a “spectacular” encounter. This match will determine which of the two European football giants advances to Sunday’s final.

Both teams have a history of competitive matches, including Spain defeating France in the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where Spain went on to become European champions. Additionally, Spain secured a victory over Les Bleus in a high-scoring Nations League last-four fixture last year. De la Fuente also referenced Roman general Julius Caesar, stating, “you can’t win without suffering,” indicating the demanding nature of achieving significant success.

Key players to watch

The semi-final will feature several star players who are expected to play pivotal roles. For France, captain Kylian Mbappe has been in exceptional form, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in six games at this World Cup. He has scored in every knockout round so far and is a significant threat for Les Bleus. Mbappe’s performance could see him surpass Lionel Messi’s goal tally in the race for the Golden Boot if he scores against Spain.

Another key player for France is Michael Olise, who, despite not scoring, has provided the most assists in the tournament with five. His partnership with Mbappe has been a highlight, and his technical ability is crucial for unlocking opposition defences. Ousmane Dembele has also been a prolific scorer for France, with five goals, including a hat-trick in a group stage match against Norway. The combined efforts of Mbappe and Dembele have resulted in 13 goals for France in the tournament.

For Spain, Lamine Yamal, an 18-year-old, is considered a key attacking threat. Yamal was also named player of the match in Spain’s quarter-final victory over Belgium and has recorded the most successful dribbles in the tournament. He noted that his movements often draw in opponents, which helps the team.

Mikel Oyarzabal is Spain’s top scorer in this World Cup with four goals. He also scored six goals in six games during the World Cup qualification stage and netted an 86th-minute winner against England in the Euro 2024 final, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure. Additionally, Mikel Merino has proven to be a valuable substitute for Spain, coming off the bench to score late winners against Portugal and Belgium in the tournament.

Historical context and future aspirations

If France wins the semi-final, they will become only the third country to reach three consecutive World Cup finals. This feat has previously been achieved by West Germany in 1982, 1986, and 1990, and by Brazil in 1994, 1998, and 2002. France previously won the World Cup in 2018 under Deschamps’ management and were runners-up in the 2022 final, losing to Argentina on penalties.
