India has regained the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team rankings following an unassailable 2-0 lead in their series against Zimbabwe in Harare. The current ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions displaced England from the top spot. England had previously taken the lead after a 4-0 T20I series victory at home.

The Indian team’s success in the series against Zimbabwe was highlighted by strong performances from both batters and bowlers. In the first T20I, the bowlers played a crucial role, alongside a notable innings from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The second T20I saw the batters take charge, securing the series win.

Key Performances in the Series

During the second T20I, after losing two early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer formed a 66-run partnership. Following this, Tilak Varma contributed a significant knock, scoring 60 runs off 29 balls. Kishan was the highest scorer in that match, making 81 runs off 44 balls.

Reflecting on the second match, Kishan mentioned the importance of understanding the wicket and building partnerships. He stated that despite losing two wickets, his role as a number three batter was to focus on the ball and play naturally. He also noted the team’s execution of their plans.

In pursuit of a target of 220, Zimbabwe lost five wickets within the first nine overs and were eventually bowled out for 129, giving India an unassailable lead in the T20I series. The two teams were scheduled to play again on July 26, Sunday.

Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Feat

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi achieved a significant milestone in men’s international cricket. The 15-year-old became the first player to record multiple scores of 50 or more before turning 16. He accomplished this during the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday.

In this match, Sooryavanshi scored 81 runs off 48 balls, helping India reach a total of 192/5 after they chose to bat first. Previously, only Nepal’s Kushal Malla had registered a 50-plus score in men’s internationals before turning 16. Sooryavanshi’s two such scores now place him uniquely in this regard.

Despite a pitch that offered assistance to bowlers, Sooryavanshi displayed a versatile batting approach. He started cautiously, scoring 11 runs from his first 10 balls and 26 from his first 20 deliveries, before reaching his second T20I fifty in 31 balls. His innings featured powerful shots, including a drive for four off Brad Evans and a 102-metre six off off-spinner Sikandar Raza. He also executed a reverse-sweep for a boundary against Wesley Madhevere.

While Sooryavanshi settled in, his opening partner Abhishek Sharma continued a period of low scores. Abhishek was dismissed for two runs, extending a sequence of low scores over his last six innings. Sooryavanshi then built a 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who scored 29. He later shared a 50-run partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer, who made 27 runs.

Sooryavanshi’s innings concluded at 81 runs when Wesley Madhevere dismissed him, with Brad Evans taking the catch at long-off. After the departures of Sooryavanshi and Shreyas, India’s scoring rate slowed, with the middle order adding 47 runs in the final five overs. Rinku Singh’s 25 runs off 14 balls helped India approach the 200-run mark, finishing at 192/5, a total considered competitive on a bowler-friendly surface.

Squad Depth and Future Prospects

With the series already secured, India entered the third and final T20 International at the Harare Sports Club with the objective of testing their squad depth and aiming for a clean sweep. The back-to-back victories have helped overcome the disappointment of India’s previous tour of Ireland and England, where they experienced six consecutive defeats. Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, the team has shown an impressive response, building confidence and momentum for the upcoming international season.

The final match provided an opportunity for experimentation. Iyer had indicated potential changes, especially after fast bowler Prince Yadav sustained a hamstring injury during his match-winning performance in the second T20I. Left-arm seamer Ashok Sharma was a strong candidate to replace him, and uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh and all-rounder Suryansh Shedge were also considered for opportunities.

A 3-0 series win would mark another significant achievement for India, as they had not completed a T20I whitewash over Zimbabwe since 2010. Beyond the match result, the team management was focused on evaluating fringe players to build squad depth for future assignments. India’s batting has gained momentum throughout the series, with Ishan Kishan rediscovering his form, Tilak Varma providing consistency in the middle order, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continuing to impress with his fearless approach. Although Abhishek Sharma has had a lean period with the bat, his contributions with the ball have highlighted his all-round value.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe aimed to avoid a whitewash. Brian Bennett showed glimpses of potential, but the hosts struggled to match India’s discipline and consistency. With a batting-friendly pitch and favorable weather conditions in Harare, the stage was set for an entertaining conclusion to the series on July 26.
