Ahead of the India versus England first ODI, reports have emerged concerning a potential rift between batter Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir. These discussions have gained traction as Kohli prepares for his return to international cricket.

During a net session prior to the first ODI, some fans and a journalist observed Gambhir closely watching Kohli bat. One user noted that Gambhir did not observe other players like KL Rahul and Shubman Gill but maintained focus on Kohli. Another account mentioned Gambhir standing beside Kohli‘s net, with Kohli reportedly playing some awkward shots before being bowled by a gentle delivery. Following this, Gambhir reportedly sent batting coach Sitanshu Kotak to speak with Kohli.

One user claimed that there was no direct conversation between Kohli and Gambhir during practice, with Kohli only speaking to Sitanshu Kotak. These observations have fueled speculation among fans and media regarding the relationship between the two.

Team dynamics and player roles

India‘s captain, Shubman Gill, spoke about the significant influence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on the team. He described them as the backbone of India‘s batting unit, highlighting their experience, consistency, and adaptability across various conditions. Gill also praised Jasprit Bumrah, referring to the trio as the ‘Terrific Trio’ by the BCCI, returning to the team after a break.

Gill mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding potential player combinations for next year’s tournament, including evaluating players not currently in the squad. He reiterated the value that both Rohit and Virat consistently bring to the team, emphasizing their decade-long consistency as crucial to the team’s overall structure.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, has consistently stressed the importance of team success over individual milestones. This stance has previously led to criticism of Virat Kohli by some fans and professionals for allegedly prioritizing personal achievements.

With the ODI World Cup approaching next year, Gambhir and his coaching staff are focused on winning the trophy. The team will now focus on improving their performances in ODIs. England enters the series with confidence following their recent T20I dominance and seeks to maintain their winning momentum on home soil.

Both teams intend to use this series as a building block for the 2027 World Cup. Virat Kohli is expected to return to international cricket in this first ODI, having last played for India in January this year.
