Mumbai Indians to review 2026 IPL season, captaincy for 2027 under discussion

The Mumbai Indians‘ leadership group is scheduled to meet in England next week to conduct a thorough review of the 2026 IPL season. This meeting is expected to lead to several significant decisions for the franchise, particularly concerning the captaincy for the 2027 IPL season.

According to reports, the management will examine a detailed post-season report prepared by head coach Mahela Jayawardene. While discussions have largely focused on potential dressing room tensions and a possible trade involving Hardik Pandya, Jayawardene’s own future with the franchise is also under consideration.

The team’s performance under Jayawardene’s tenure has seen a decline, moving from a fourth-place finish in 2025 to a ninth-place finish in 2026. The franchise appears to be looking for a fresh start to return to winning ways, making Jayawardene’s continued role uncertain.

Captaincy Contenders Emerge

A central point of discussion for the Mumbai Indians will be finalising their captain for the 2027 season. The primary contenders for this role are Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma. Bumrah is seen as a strong candidate, having been a consistent presence for the franchise throughout his career.

Tilak Varma, a young batter, has been progressing through India’s leadership pathway. However, his batting performance has been inconsistent, leading to some concern that handing him the captaincy at this stage might hinder his development rather than aid it.

Bumrah has prior leadership experience, having captained the side against Punjab Kings during IPL 2026 when both Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav were unavailable. He also led the Indian team to a victory over Australia in Perth during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

Choosing Bumrah could offer a pragmatic, short-term solution given his consistency and proven leadership at the international level. However, this approach might postpone addressing the long-term question of who will lead the Mumbai Indians once his playing career begins to wind down.

Conversely, while Tilak’s inconsistency is a valid concern, leadership roles have historically helped some young players develop greater focus and accountability. If the Mumbai Indians aim to build a sustainable core, gradually preparing Tilak within a stable system, rather than relying on temporary senior leaders, could be beneficial.

Another option for captaincy is Suryakumar Yadav. Despite currently experiencing a lean patch, his credentials in T20 cricket are widely recognised, and a return to form is anticipated with dedicated effort.

Hardik Pandya’s Future and Squad Changes

The future of Hardik Pandya is also a key item on the agenda for the review meeting. There is considerable interest surrounding a potential trade involving Pandya, and clarity on this matter is expected after the franchise completes its season review. The stance taken by the Mumbai Indians in these discussions will significantly influence any potential deal.

Reports also suggest that another former India skipper has attracted interest from rival franchises for potential trades. The Mumbai Indians are anticipated to make numerous changes to their squad ahead of the IPL 2027 season.

The team’s performance in IPL 2026 was challenging, as they failed to qualify for the playoffs. They secured only four victories out of 14 games, finishing in ninth place in the points table with eight points. This poor showing led to their elimination from the tournament before their final league stage match.

Hardik Pandya, who took on the leadership role before IPL 2024, is widely expected to leave the franchise before the next season. Earlier reports indicate that he is not interested in leading the team again. Furthermore, vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav reportedly had a disagreement with the Mumbai Indians after the tournament, evidenced by his removal of posts related to the team from his Instagram account, suggesting his potential departure from the squad.

Jasprit Bumrah has been a part of the Mumbai Indians since his debut and has contributed to their title-winning campaigns across five seasons. In IPL 2026, he took four wickets in 13 games with an economy of 8.36. Tilak Varma, a left-handed batter, has shown consistent performance in recent seasons, accumulating 359 runs in 14 games during the 2026 IPL season, including a century and two fifties, at a strike rate of 145.93.
