Saikia confirmed on Saturday that the senior opener remains a key part of India’s One Day International (ODI) plans, clarifying that the final ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday will not be his last match for the country.
The clarification from the BCCI comes amidst reports concerning Sharma’s future, particularly after suggestions that he might not be an automatic selection for the team beyond the ongoing series against England. These discussions arose as selectors reportedly aim to evaluate every ODI player in preparation for the 2027 World Cup.
Uncertainty Surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future
Despite the BCCI’s statement, there has been underlying uncertainty about Rohit Sharma’s role in the ODI setup. Reports indicated that selectors were looking to give Yashasvi Jaiswal an extended opportunity in the format. This approach is said to have the support of the Indian team management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Saikia firmly asserted that no decision has been made regarding Sharma’s future. He stated, “There are lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday.” He further added that Sharma is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he is considered for selection.
The sentiment from the BCCI secretary directly addresses earlier reports suggesting that Sharma’s place in India’s ODI XI was no longer guaranteed. These reports highlighted that selectors intended to assess each player’s form and fitness as preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup intensified. The assessment, however, also indicated that the opportunity for Sharma to continue remained open, provided he justified his selection through consistent performances.
