Controversial Red Card Incident

Folarin Balogun, a striker for the United States National Team, received a straight red card during the World Cup round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The incident occurred in the second half of the game, held in Santa Clara, for a foul on Tarik Muharemovic. Balogun appeared distressed by referee Raphael Claus’ decision as he left the field.

The foul took place in the 61st minute, with the U.S. holding a 1-0 lead, a goal scored by Balogun himself. As the ball was played up the left sideline, Balogun attempted to position himself, inadvertently landing on the back of Muharemovic’s leg, making contact with the calf and ankle. While the foul did not appear intentional, slow-motion replays highlighted the strong contact made with the defender.

Following a review instructed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the pitchside monitor, referee Claus informed Levi’s Stadium that Balogun had committed a “serious foul,” leading to his dismissal. This decision means Balogun will be suspended for the U.S.’s next match against Belgium in Seattle on Monday, July 6.

Rules and Expert Analysis

According to the laws of soccer, a tackle or challenge that endangers an opponent’s safety or uses excessive force is considered serious foul play. This includes lunging at an opponent with excessive force or endangering their safety. Referee Claus cited “serious foul play” as the reason for the red card.

Former Premier League referee Graham Scott offered an analysis, suggesting that the introduction of VAR has influenced such decisions. Scott noted that while historically, serious foul play involved high-speed, out-of-control tackles, VAR’s focus has shifted to the point of contact. Slow-motion replays and still images, he explained, can make seemingly innocuous tackles appear more severe.

Scott described Balogun’s actions as part of the normal rough and tumble of football, stating that he was not out of control and the contact was accidental. However, the replays showed Muharemovic’s ankle buckling, indicating clear distress. Scott suggested that such tackles should ideally result in cautions at most, but under recent interpretations of the law, a red card was deemed inevitable.

FIFA regulations state that a sending-off automatically incurs a suspension from the subsequent match. A FIFA official confirmed that red cards and their subsequent suspensions cannot be appealed. This means Balogun will miss the upcoming match against Belgium. Further sanctions could be imposed by the FIFA disciplinary committee, potentially leading to additional missed games if the U.S. advances further in the tournament.

Impact and Balogun’s Performance

Despite the red card, the U.S. team rallied, adding to their lead with Malik Tillman’s late free kick, securing a victory and a spot in the last 16. Balogun’s early goal had given the team the initial advantage.

Balogun, who is 24 years old, has made a significant impact in the tournament, scoring three goals in four matches for the United States National Team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He scored a brace in the opening match against Paraguay and found the net again in the round-of-32 clash. This achievement places him among a select group of American players to score three goals in a single World Cup tournament, joining Landon Donovan, Bert Patenaude, Clint Dempsey, and Brian McBride.

Following his goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun celebrated with LeBron James’ “The Silencer” gesture, which was acknowledged by James himself. Balogun will be able to attend the next game at Lumen Field but in a limited capacity, as suspended players are allowed to sit in the stands but not in the immediate vicinity of the field of play, the dressing room, tunnel, or technical area.
