Kitzbühel: Bublik advances to semi-finals, Hanfmann makes history

Bublik secures semi-final spot

Alexander Bublik, the top seed at ATP Kitzbühel, advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Alex Molcan 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday afternoon. This victory marked Bublik’s 400th tour-level match. He will now face Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No. 4 seed, in the next round. Bublik is the defending champion and is aiming to become the first title-holder to reach the semi-finals at this event since Robin Haase in 2013. This will be Bublik’s fifth semi-final appearance this season and his 27th career semi-final overall.

Molcan, who reached the semi-finals of ATP Umag last week, had a clay record of 24-7 this season prior to the match. Despite his strong season on clay, he was unable to overcome Bublik. The match was seen as a significant opportunity for Bublik, especially after the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds were eliminated from the tournament.

Etcheverry and Halys also progress

Tomas Martin Etcheverry secured his place in the semi-finals by defeating Ignacio Buse 6-2, 7-5. This marks Etcheverry’s third semi-final appearance of the season, following his runs in Buenos Aires and his title win in Rio de Janeiro. He is looking to add another clay semi-final to a season that has already seen him claim his maiden ATP Tour title. Buse, the No. 5 seed, was aiming for Peru’s first semi-final appearance at this event in the Open Era.

In the bottom half of the draw, Yannick Hanfmann made history by becoming the oldest semi-finalist in Kitzbühel‘s Open Era. Hanfmann, at 34 years and eight months, surpassed the previous record held by Paolo Lorenzi. He defeated Sebastian Baez 6-3, 6-1 to reach his 11th career ATP Tour semi-final and his fourth at this particular event. Hanfmann will now play against Quentin Halys for a spot in Sunday’s final.

Quentin Halys reached his first semi-final of the season by beating No. 6 seed Mariano Navone 7-5, 6-3. This win also marked Halys’s first victory over an Argentine opponent on tour after six consecutive losses in previous encounters. Earlier in the week, Halys had eliminated No. 2 seed Valentin Vacherot. Navone had previously defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets in the Round of 16, while Halys had beaten Laslo Djere in straight sets.

Quarter-final overview

The quarter-finals in Austria saw some unexpected results, particularly in the bottom half of the draw. The eliminations of No. 2 seed Valentin Vacherot and No. 3 seed Arthur Rinkerknech opened up opportunities for unseeded players. This means that at least one unseeded player from the bottom half is guaranteed to play in the final on Saturday.

The match between Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Ignacio Buse was the only quarter-final guaranteed to produce a seeded semi-finalist, as both players were seeded fourth and fifth, respectively. Both Etcheverry and Buse are considered top-35 players with similar clay court records in 2026; Etcheverry held a 19-10 record on clay, while Buse had an 18-11 record. Their match was anticipated to be close, as they had never met on the ATP Tour before.

Sebastian Baez, who reached the quarter-finals of the ATP Bastad tournament last week, was defeated by Yannick Hanfmann. This was Baez’s second loss to Hanfmann at this venue, having also been defeated by the German last year. Baez was aiming for his 18th career semi-final.
