FIFA unveils World Cup Dream XI after global fan vote

Spain, the recent FIFA World Cup champions, along with France and Argentina, have multiple players featured in the official Dream XI, selected through a global fan vote. This team recognises the standout performers from the six-week tournament held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The selection was revealed after Spain secured the trophy by defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in New Jersey.

Despite England finishing third in the tournament, only one player from their squad, Jude Bellingham, made it into the Dream XI. Bellingham, a midfielder for Real Madrid, concluded the tournament with seven goals, marking the highest tally ever recorded by an England player in a single FIFA World Cup. His performance contributed to England‘s best finish since their 1966 victory. Other notable England players, such as Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, also delivered strong performances, but Bellingham was the sole representative in the fan-voted XI.

Dominant Nations in the Dream XI

Spain, who completed an unbeaten tournament, has three players in the Dream XI. Captain Rodri, who also received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, leads the midfield. He is joined by full-backs Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro. Cucurella‘s defensive efforts were particularly noted, with no winger reportedly having significant success against him, and he was considered instrumental in limiting Lionel Messi‘s impact in the final match.

France, despite finishing fourth, also contributed three players to the Dream XI. Kylian Mbappé, the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals, occupies the right side of the attack. He became the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice and surpassed Lionel Messi‘s all-time World Cup scoring record with 22 career goals. Midfielder Michael Olise, who recorded seven assists, the most by any player in a single FIFA World Cup, and central defender Dayot Upamecano complete France‘s representation.

Beaten finalists Argentina have two players in the XI: Lionel Messi on the left wing, who finished with eight goals and four assists, and defender Lisandro Martínez, who partners Upamecano in central defence. The forward line is completed by Norway striker Erling Haaland, who scored seven goals and helped his country reach their first-ever quarter-final appearance in his World Cup debut.

Surprise Goalkeeper Selection

The goalkeeper spot in the Dream XI was filled by Cape Verde veteran Vozinha, a selection that surprised some given the presence of Golden Glove winner Unai Simón, England‘s Jordan Pickford, and France‘s Mike Maignan. The 40-year-old Vozinha emerged as a notable player during Cape Verde‘s run to the Round of 32, where they narrowly lost 3-2 to Argentina after extra time.

Vozinha‘s performances included clean sheets against Spain and Saudi Arabia, making 18 saves throughout the tournament. His social media following reportedly grew significantly, starting with approximately 50,000 Instagram followers before Cape Verde‘s opening match against Spain and surging to 29.5 million by the end of the World Cup.

The Dream XI also highlights other individual honours from the tournament. Rodri received the Golden Ball, while Messi and Mbappé were awarded the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively. Mbappé‘s 10 goals secured him the Golden Boot, and Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón earned the Golden Glove after conceding only one goal in eight matches. Additionally, teenage defender Pau Cubarsí was named the FIFA Young Player Award winner, and the Netherlands received the FIFA Fair Play Award for accumulating only three yellow cards during their campaign.

Football Extra’s Team of the Tournament

A separate team of the tournament, compiled by Football Extra, also featured several of these prominent players. Their goalkeeper selection also went to Vozinha, acknowledging his memorable performance against Spain. The defence included Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella from Spain. In central defence, Pau Cubarsí was chosen alongside Cristian Romero of Argentina, despite other considerations like France‘s Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, and England‘s Marc Guehi.

In midfield, Rodri was an undisputed choice. Dani Olmo was selected over other contenders like Fabian Ruiz and Pedri due to his consistent performances in knockout games. The attacking positions saw Kylian Mbappé on the left, Lionel Messi on the right, and Jude Bellingham centrally. Erling Haaland was chosen as the lone striker, having scored seven goals and demonstrating a consistent threat throughout the tournament.

Haaland‘s selection came after Norway met England in the quarter-finals, where England emerged victorious. Haaland‘s seven goals edged out Harry Kane‘s tally, from one less game. An honourable mention was given to Spain‘s Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored five goals and exceeded expectations.
