The upcoming World Cup quarter-final in Miami will see Declan Rice of England and Martin Ødegaard of Norway face off, putting their club camaraderie aside. Both players, integral to Arsenal‘s recent successes, will be central figures in determining which nation advances to the semi-finals. While they have shared the pitch many times as teammates, this encounter marks a significant moment in their careers.

The respect between the two players remains high, despite the temporary pause in their usual friendly interactions. They have been key architects in Arsenal‘s modern era, and their individual performances are expected to be decisive in the match. Their previous face-offs have been limited to training sessions at London Colney, where they are known for setting high standards.

Ødegaard, who became Norway‘s captain in 2021 at the age of 22, later received the same leadership role at Arsenal from Mikel Arteta. This decision symbolised a more focused approach for the club. Rice has expressed strong admiration for Ødegaard‘s leadership, stating, “I wouldn’t want anyone else being our captain.”

Ødegaard has praised Rice‘s all-around capabilities, noting his energy, fighting spirit, and ability to contribute both defensively and offensively. He described Rice as a “very complete player.” Ødegaard‘s importance to Arteta’s plans has been scrutinised due to a series of injuries that impacted his title-winning season, as well as the arrival of Eberechi Eze. Despite this, Arsenal reportedly has no plans to sell him. For Norway, his status is more stable, with coach Ståle Solbakken highlighting his long-standing role as a top player and captain alongside Erling Haaland.

Ødegaard‘s performance in Norway‘s opening game against Iraq drew criticism, but he has since shown improved form, particularly during Brazil‘s defeat in the last 16. Leading Norway in their first World Cup since 1998 has been a significant goal for him. During periods sidelined, he maintained regular contact with Solbakken to discuss his condition and team matters.

Tactical considerations and upcoming fixtures

Solbakken indicated that Ødegaard might have a more expansive role within the Norway team compared to his responsibilities at Arsenal. He explained that this is partly due to Ødegaard‘s extensive experience and the team’s reliance on him to carry more responsibility. In contrast, at Arsenal, players like Rice and Martín Zubimendi can share some of these duties.

It is anticipated that Rice may be tasked with neutralising Ødegaard‘s influence in the upcoming match. While Elliot Anderson was observed marking Gilberto Mora in a previous game against Mexico, this might have been a strategy to manage Rice‘s workload. Rice‘s ability to manage games effectively is considered one of his key strengths, a skill he reportedly honed after receiving a red card for knocking the ball away from Joël Veltman against Brighton.

The bond between Rice and Ødegaard, strengthened by their shared successes at Arsenal, will be temporarily set aside for this high-stakes encounter. Ødegaard has expressed his enjoyment of playing alongside Rice.
