Allegations and Police Investigation

Shashank Singh, a cricketer for Punjab Kings, has responded to allegations of assault and wrongful confinement made by his former cook, Vipendra Singh Tomar. An FIR was registered against Singh, his father Shailesh Singh, and their driver at the Ratibad police station in Bhopal. The case was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and a police investigation is currently underway.

Tomar, who is from Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh, stated that he began working as a cook at the Singh family’s residence in Neelbad on June 25. He claimed he was promised a monthly salary of ₹15,000, along with food and accommodation. Tomar alleged that he was later told there were issues with his work and that his mobile phone was confiscated. The situation reportedly escalated on June 28 when he requested his phone back.

According to Tomar’s complaint, Shailesh Singh, Shashank Singh, and their driver entered his room, verbally abused him, and assaulted him with their hands and fists before forcing him out of the house. Tomar also alleged that ₹1,000 was transferred from his mobile phone, which the accused claimed was for food and accommodation expenses.

Shashank Singh’s Counter-Claims

Shashank Singh has denied the allegations, stating that neither he nor his family assaulted Tomar or held him against his will. Singh told ANI, "No, we didn’t hold him hostage." He claimed that Tomar misrepresented his cooking abilities, stating, "It is true that he arrived claiming to be a cook, but he wasn’t a cook at all. He didn’t know how to cook."

Singh further alleged that Tomar was taking videos and photos inside their home, including private areas and his room, leading him to suspect an intention to steal. Singh mentioned that his mother had Tomar delete videos and photos from his phone because they contained private content of their house. He also noted that the police have not yet contacted him regarding the matter.

Singh questioned the timeline presented in the complaint, stating, "A person who comes on the evening of the 25th and leaves on the morning of the 28th – how can you call that keeping someone hostage?" He also claimed that Tomar had sought an advance payment of ₹20,000 shortly after arriving, despite being recommended by a friend of his father.

Singh maintained that physical altercation is not in his nature, stating, "I believe that anyone who knows me, knows that physical altercation is completely out of the question for me. I hesitate even to use abusive language, so I certainly couldn’t do something like that." He also mentioned that his family had considered calling the police themselves when they discovered Tomar taking photos and videos, but they let him go after he pleaded.

Further Details from the Complaint

Tomar’s complaint also stated that he decided he did not want to continue working at the residence after observing an abusive work environment and realizing the workload was excessive. He alleged that when he expressed his desire to quit, his phone was taken away, and he was told he would have to work for at least a month.

Tomar claimed that he was intimidated and that the accused tried to prevent him from leaving. He alleged that he worked for two days hoping his phone would be returned, and when it wasn’t, he locked himself in a room and demanded his phone back. He further stated that the family’s driver attempted to break down the door, and when he opened it, Shashank Singh and the driver allegedly assaulted him. Tomar’s medical examination reportedly showed visible injury marks on his face and body.

He also claimed that he was made to pay back for the food he consumed during his three days at the residence, with his brother-in-law sending him ₹1,000 for this purpose. Tomar alleged that he was forced to write a statement before being allowed to leave, and he was not paid for his work. The Ratibad Police are continuing their investigation into these allegations.
