Germany substitute Deniz Undav has been named the top attacking player in FIFA’s official performance rankings following the World Cup 2026 group stage. This places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who secured the second spot, and Kylian Mbappé, who is ranked third.
Undav achieved this top ranking despite not starting any matches for Germany, making only three substitute appearances for a total of 86 minutes. His impactful contributions from the bench were enough to surpass other prominent players.
Undav’s Impactful Performances
During his limited playing time, Undav scored three goals and provided two assists. This translates to an average of one goal every 28.7 minutes and a direct goal contribution every 17.2 minutes. His efficiency was a key factor in his high ranking.
One of his notable performances occurred during Germany’s 7-1 victory over Curaçao, where he scored once and assisted twice in just 26 minutes. He followed this with a brace against Ivory Coast, including the decisive winning goal in the 94th minute, helping Germany secure a 2-1 win.
These performances earned Undav an attacking rating of 8.36, narrowly exceeding Messi’s rating of 8.34. This makes him FIFA’s highest-rated attacking player after the group stage, despite his role as a substitute.
Messi and Mbappé Among Top Performers
Despite finishing second in the attacking rankings, Lionel Messi continues to have a strong tournament. The Argentina captain has scored six goals in three group-stage matches, increasing his all-time World Cup goal tally to 19. He is currently the tournament’s leading scorer as the knockout rounds begin.
Messi also made history during Argentina’s victory over Jordan, becoming the first player to score against 13 different countries in the FIFA World Cup. According to Opta, he is also the first footballer to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
Kylian Mbappé of France holds the third position in FIFA’s attacking rankings with a score of 8.13. Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior is fourth with 7.92, having scored four goals in the group stage, including one in each of Brazil’s three matches against Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. This marks him as the first Brazilian player in 24 years to score in every group-stage match of a World Cup.
Other Notable Players and Rankings
France winger Ousmane Dembélé climbed to sixth place after a significant performance against Norway, where he scored a first-half hat-trick in 32 minutes. This made him the first player since Oleg Salenko in 1994 to achieve a first-half World Cup hat-trick and the second-fastest player to complete a World Cup treble from kick-off.
Norway striker Erling Haaland is also among the leading performers, having scored four goals in his debut World Cup campaign. Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi is ranked fifth in the overall top 10 outfield performers.

Outfield players are scored out of 10 across attacking, creativity, and defending, while goalkeepers are assessed separately for their goalkeeping and possession contributions.
In other position-specific metrics, France’s Michael Olise leads the creativity rankings with a score of 8.03. Canada’s Luc De Fougerolles is the highest-rated defender with 7.38, and Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams are the top two goalkeepers.
As the Round of 32 commences, the competition for individual honours remains open, with Messi leading the Golden Boot race with six goals, and Mbappé, Dembélé, Vinícius Júnior, and Haaland each having scored four times.
