Enzo Maresca: Succeeding Pep Guardiola at Man City is 'ultimate test' for Italian boss at club who 'will only accept winning'
Maresca’s Return to Manchester City
Enzo Maresca has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester City, signing a three-year contract that extends until the summer of 2029. This marks Maresca’s third tenure at the club, bringing with him a background of experience and success. He previously served as an assistant to Pep Guardiola during City’s treble-winning season in 2022/23, and also managed the club’s EDS team.
Maresca expressed his familiarity with Manchester City, calling it a club he knows well and highlighting the opportunity to manage the team as brilliant. He acknowledged the club’s innovative, planned, and purposeful approach, which he described as a dream situation for a manager, providing the consistency needed for effective work. He also stated his understanding of the demands and expectations at the club.
Manchester City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak believes Maresca is a perfect match for the club, noting that the Italian’s preferred style of football aligns with City’s values. He praised Maresca’s ambition and hunger for achievement, viewing his return as a natural next step for both the manager and the club. Chief Executive Officer Ferran Soriano added that Maresca was the standout candidate, citing his personality, vision for football, integrity, charisma, and passion.
The Challenge of Succeeding Guardiola
The appointment places Maresca in the challenging position of succeeding Pep Guardiola, one of the most successful managers in English football history. Guardiola led Manchester City to 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, during his 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium. This transition has been described as the “ultimate test” for Maresca, with expectations at the club set for nothing less than winning.
Former player Gary Neville commented on the significant demands facing Maresca, stating that “nothing less than winning is going to be accepted at Man City.” He noted that the club’s recent success and the quality of the squad will place Maresca in a different position compared to his previous roles. Neville acknowledged Maresca’s strong coaching journey but emphasised the immense nature of this new task.
Maresca is no stranger to success, having guided Chelsea to victories in the Conference League and Club World Cup during his full season in charge at Stamford Bridge. However, he will face a different level of expectation upon his return to the north west as a manager. Despite the pressure, Neville offered some optimism, pointing to the rebuild already underway at Manchester City, particularly after missing out on the Premier League trophy in consecutive seasons for the first time under Guardiola.

Neville highlighted the emergence of a new young team towards the end of last season, mentioning players like Nunes, O’Reilly, Guehi, and Khusanov in defence, and attacking talents such as Cherki, Semenyo, and Doku supporting Haaland. He suggested that if Maresca can effectively manage the midfield and secure the squad’s commitment, he has a strong chance of success. The imminent addition of Elliot Anderson for £116m is expected to further strengthen the team, with plans for another forward and potentially a right-back to compete with Matheus Nunes.
Compensation and Future Outlook
Maresca’s move to Manchester City involved his departure from Chelsea mid-season, for which he has apologised and will personally pay undisclosed compensation. One report indicated that Manchester City might have to pay Chelsea £17m, though neither club has confirmed a final settlement figure. Maresca himself has referred to the Manchester City job as a “huge challenge” given the task of taking over from Pep Guardiola.
Neville also suggested areas where Manchester City could still improve, particularly in defence. He believes the club is well-equipped at the attacking end, with Anderson reinforcing the midfield, but noted the potential need for another midfielder and more defensive cover due to possible injuries. He stressed that while Manchester City will score many goals regardless of the coach, the key will be ensuring the team functions cohesively to endure the demands of winning a Premier League title. Maresca stated, “I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City.”
