Hardik Pandya's blockbuster exit from MI in motion, seven franchises express interest in star all-rounder

Hardik Pandya, the all-rounder, is reportedly considering a departure from Mumbai Indians (MI) following a challenging IPL 2026 campaign where the team finished ninth. This potential move has ignited a significant trade war within the Indian Premier League (IPL), with seven franchises expressing interest in acquiring his services.

According to reports, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are among the leading contenders in this pursuit. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have reportedly opted not to join the race for Pandya.

Intense Trade Negotiations Underway

The interest in Pandya comes after his mutual agreement with MI to part ways, reportedly due to immense mental exhaustion and a fractured dressing room environment. CSK, despite entering the race late, has reportedly positioned itself strongly, creating an exciting contest with KKR and RR, who are also actively involved in discussions.

CSK views Pandya as a potentially suitable player for the team in the post-MS Dhoni era, though leadership duties are not guaranteed there. In contrast, KKR is reportedly prepared to offer him the captaincy role, and RR is also exploring the possibility of him becoming a long-term leader for their franchise. Communication channels are active between MI and interested franchises like CSK and KKR as they explore various options for a potential trade deal.

The trade’s finalisation is heavily dependent on MI’s willingness to release their captain and the financial logistics involved in what could be one of the biggest transfers in IPL history. CSK has a history of executing major trades, such as those involving Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sam Curran, and is reportedly monitoring Pandya’s trade status with a patient approach.

However, player consent and ongoing negotiations between franchises remain crucial, and late complications cannot be ruled out in the unpredictable landscape of IPL trade discussions. Several possibilities are reportedly being weighed, including whether the move could be a straightforward cash transaction or involve a player exchange.

Captaincy and Player Consent as Key Factors

A central aspect of the ongoing discussions is the question of player consent, particularly whether Pandya would be willing to join a franchise that does not offer him the captaincy. Reports indicate that two respected former international captains have shown interest in the situation, with one franchise having offered leadership responsibilities. However, these initial conversations did not lead to a final agreement, and a fresh round of discussions is anticipated with all interested parties.

The outcome of Pandya’s potential trade could also influence MI’s future decisions regarding another high-profile Indian cricketer. Should both senior players exit, reports suggest that MI might pivot towards a youthful rebuilding phase. If MI opts for an all-cash arrangement for Pandya, questions arise about whether a similar approach would apply to his teammate. Clarity on these developments is expected to emerge as one deal is likely to be settled before the next can properly take shape.

Pandya’s return to MI was itself a result of an all-cash deal ahead of IPL 2024, after he had led Gujarat Titans to consecutive IPL finals, including a title win in 2022. He spent seven seasons with MI since his debut in 2015 before his move to Gujarat. Upon his return to MI, Pandya was made captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. Under Pandya’s leadership in 2024, MI finished last in the league, and his own form reportedly dipped, managing 206 runs and claiming four wickets in 10 games.
