Koeman’s departure from the national team
Ronald Koeman has announced his resignation as the manager of the Netherlands national football team. This decision comes after the team’s elimination from the World Cup in the Round of 32, following a defeat to Morocco. Koeman’s departure marks the end of his three-year tenure in his second spell as the national coach.
The Dutch Football Association confirmed that Koeman informed officials of his decision not to extend his expiring contract. The Netherlands lost to Morocco in a penalty shootout, with the match ending 1-1 after extra time. Issa Diop’s stoppage-time header for Morocco cancelled out Cody Gakpo’s second-half opener for the Netherlands.

During the penalty shootout, Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s penalty, and Ismael Saibari converted Morocco’s decisive kick, securing their place in the Round of 16. Koeman expressed that leaving was a difficult decision due to the strong relationships he had built with the players and his coaching staff.
Reflecting on his tenure and future plans
Koeman thanked everyone involved with the national team during his two periods as coach. He acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the team’s early exit from the World Cup, especially as the Netherlands had aimed to challenge for the title and reach at least the semifinals. Despite finishing first in their group, the team struggled with consistent performances before their first knockout match.
Koeman faced criticism for his tactical approach against Morocco, particularly his decision to use five defenders. He defended this choice, stating that the formation helped reduce the number of chances conceded compared to the group stage. However, the Netherlands showed limited attacking threat for extended periods and could not maintain their lead after Gakpo’s goal in the 72nd minute.

In a social media post, Koeman thanked the players, staff, the KNVB, and the supporters for their dedication and support, especially during challenging times. He expressed mixed feelings about his departure, stating that he would have preferred to conclude his time with a World Cup title, but pride in his football journey prevails.
Looking ahead for the Netherlands
Koeman cited a desire to spend more time with his family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren, as a factor in his decision. He described it as the right and logical step at this stage of his life, especially after a personally challenging period for his family.
Nigel de Jong, the KNVB director of top-level football, stated that the federation respects Koeman’s decision and appreciates his commitment to the national team. The KNVB has initiated its post-World Cup evaluation and will begin considering candidates to replace him.
The federation faces some urgency as the Netherlands are scheduled to start their UEFA Nations League campaign in September. However, De Jong indicated that officials would take the necessary time to make the correct appointment. Koeman first coached the Netherlands in 2018, leading them to the 2019 UEFA Nations League final, before leaving in 2020 to manage Barcelona. He returned to the national team at the beginning of 2023, and during this second spell, the Netherlands reached the Euro 2024 semifinals, where they were defeated by England.
